Town Council Meeting re: Ice Rink Relocation October 21st

Pending Vote

Wednesday, October 21st, the Town of Mammoth Lakes Recreation Commission is expected to present a full recommendation at the 6:00 p.m. Town Council meeting. The Council will most likely vote to relocate the ice rink, or Multi-Use Facility, to Mammoth Creek Park West.

Voice Your Opposition!!

At this time, continued vociferous opposition from the public is the best tactic. If possible, attend the meeting. Or email your opinion to the Town Council before Wednesday (attn: Town Clerk, Jamie Gray) jgray@townofmammothlakes.ca.gov. Recommended talking points:

  • MCW is a unique Town asset that will be compromised–why the rush since there are several other viable options?
  • potential for pollution leaching into Mammoth Creek (glycol, diesel fuel and other chemicals used in the maintenance of a rink)
  • the loss of peace and tranquility to users of the park due to noise and crowds
  • how will a bankrupt town recoup the millions spent on this relocation
  • benefits to the school district & Town with a renewed lease
  • any comment that focuses on a decision that benefits the whole community and not just surrounding residents

Update:

Last May, the Town Council directed the Recreation Commission to return to the negotiating table with Mammoth School District.

July 15, the Town Council voted against a proposed long-term lease with the School District and voted to convene a Multi-Use Facility Task Force to perform due diligence in investigating all aspects of moving the ice rink. October 13, the Task Force presented its findings to the Recreation Commission (view the meeting here); it’s expected to make a full recommendation this Wednesday.
